IN THE MORNING, I LAY on the couch eating cereal and watching cartoons. Jay was in the security room drinking coffee with my father’s security team. Just like always.

He was already there when I woke. I knew it, I’d found Panadol and juice beside my bed and I could feel him. I’d asked Margot anyway when she’d brought the coffee and cereal to the couch. ‘Did you need him?’ she’d asked curiously but I shook my head. Clearly if he was in the security room, my parents were home, otherwise he didn’t bother keeping his distance and often sat on a chair and watched cartoons with me.

Now I found myself wondering what he was doing and what he was thinking. I was going to drive myself mad if I didn’t find a way to stop it, to control my wayward thoughts but I couldn’t help it, I’d seen him at his rawest. I’d seen his soul and I’d liked what I’d seen and I wanted to see it again. Now we’d hashed things out, now my head was straight. I kept going back to the same thoughts, him naked, on top of me, every beautifully taut muscle flexing, the way his face went just so in that moment right before....

‘More coffee, dear,’ Margot offered, ripping me from my thoughts.

I had to stop, think about something else. I checked my phone. Surely there was a party or something being planned that could distract me? But I got no further than the first two posts on Facebook before I messaged him, ‘I need to see you.’

‘No. Just do your thing like normal, we’ll go out at lunch time, like usual.’

‘I have nowhere to go,’ I told him.

He replied with a winky face. A bloody winky face. I would give him a bloody winky face. I wasn’t twelve and I didn’t like being kept and managed. I’d promised to let him love me, I didn’t promise to behave. I didn’t feel like sitting around the house watching cartoons while he drank coffee in another room. I wanted to see him, to feel him, just for a minute, to remember it was all real. I needed it like I needed air. Something. I wasn’t even sure what myself. But I couldn’t sit still, so if he wouldn’t come out to play then I was going to have to force him out.

I dressed in my skimpiest bikini, a fluorescent green number I’d bought for a pool party at Indi’s, then put on a pair of cut offs and a tank top. There were cameras in all the main living spaces of the house and I knew exactly where each one of them was. I mightn’t have known much about love and being loved or relationships and their rules but I knew about men. I knew about turning them on, frustrating them, and mostly, I knew about Jay. I knew, or I hoped I knew, what would draw him out of his foxhole to take me somewhere else.
